Frequently Asked Questions

What will you be doing, exactly, when you get to Guatemala?
Jerry will be working with Guatemalan pastors and church leaders in the areas of discipleship and non-formal education. Initially he will be building relationships to lay that foundation.

What is non-formal education?
Teaching classes similar to those found in Bible Colleges or seminaries with the pastor or church leader not earning a degree.

Will you be "alone" or will their be other missionaries around?
We will live near at least one other couple. Also, Jerry will be on a team with at least two other missionary men with the vision of reaching the Mayans in the Highlands of Guatemala with the Gospel of Christ.

What does CAM International stand for?
The mission was founded in 1890 by Dr. C.I. Scofield. Originally named Central American Mission, due to the focus on Central America. The organization was, later named CAM International, when its ministry extended beyond Central America into Mexico, US, Canada, Spain, Albania and South America. CAM is very well known and respected in Latin countries and are now mobilizing Spanish speakers to reach the world for Him.

When will you get to Guatemala?
Before we are able to move to Guatemala we are required to attend three months at the Center for Intercultural Training, CIT. CAM requires us to have 80% of our monthly support committed before we are able to attend this school in North Carolina. Out current target date for attending CIT is February of 2010. CAM wisely requires us to have 100% of our support before we are released to the field. Our goal is to be in Guatemala by next summer.

What percent of support do you have now?
We are at about 25% of our monthly support right now. We also need to raise a one-time outgoing fund, we are at 50% in that account. So, that is VERY encouraging to us.

How much money do you need to raise?
We need $5800 a month and
$48,000 in our one-time fund.

Why so much?
CAM researched living expenses with current missionaries living in Guatemala to come up with these numbers. Our monthly support includes $2500 for our salary as well as rent, overseas medical insurance, children's education expense and ministry expense. 15% goes to CAM for administrative support.
Our one-time support includes our cultural training school ($10,000), emergency travel fund, language school in Guatemala ($10,000), traveling expenses to move our family ($2500), visas ($5000), home set-up expenses (furniture, appliances etc.), and a vehicle.

Can we already begin to support you?
Yes! The money that currently comes in monthly gets added to our one-time fund. We can also use it for our ministry expenses and as soon as we have 50%, we can live on support and devote ourselves full-time to raising the rest of the support.
Of course, your gifts are all tax-deductible and it is even possible to set up an automatic withdrawal from your account.
If you would rather start supporting us when we get to the field, we would greatly appreciate a “pledge” so we have a better estimate of where we are.

Thank You so much for your interest and encouragement as we follow this path God has lead us down to reach the Mayans of Guatemala!
